My Story

Between my Sophomore and Junior years, I participated in the Environmental and Sustainability Studies program in Costa Rica. The program had been highly recommended as the experience of a lifetime by other students working on their Environmental Studies degrees.  During my three week stay in Costa Rica, I saw stunning beaches, beautiful wildlife, and powerful volcanoes, all of which I will never forget. In the 8 years since returning home, I've come to realize that I gained a lot more than beautiful photographs and fun memories. Through my learning abroad experience, I have developed more patience and perseverance, as well as a better appreciation for the shared human experience. The skills and experiences I gained through my learning abroad program have helped shape my career development by helping me try new things and be adaptable when faced with uncertainty. Additionally, the cross cultural communication skills have proven especially helpful in my current role to support R & D Project management for a Denmark-based team. As I work with international colleagues on a daily basis, I find my learning abroad experience informs how I approach situations and conversations- taking into account cultural and language differences. I would highly recommend a learning abroad experience to all students as a way to develop essential skills in our globalizing world.
