Learning Abroad Program: Himalayan Film in Kathmandu, Nepal

U Background: BS, Environmental and Sustainability Studies, 2016

Current Position: Senior Student Fellow at the Sorenson Impact Center

I'm currently wrapping up my Masters of Public Administration degree, but when I completed my study abroad, I was an undergraduate student studying Environmental and Sustainability Studies. For my learning abroad experience, I traveled to Nepal as part of the Himalayan Film program to work with a nonprofit that provides social, environmental, economic, and development services. I learned how to conceptualize, produce, and edit a documentary-style film, all while embracing a new culture and learning about the importance of education for rural areas in developing countries. This program was the culmination of my degree and would highly recommend all students take the time to visit a developing country. The insight and perspective I gained changed the trajectory of my life – an experience that I could not have had without the funding support from the Learning Abroad Office. I currently work at the Sorenson Impact Center and use film production and storytelling to tackle social impact issues, and Nepal gave me my newfound passion for giving the most vulnerable a voice.
