Office for Global Engagement Scholarships
Annually, the University of Utah Office for Global Engagement awards over $400,000 to students who participate on Learning Abroad programs. Recipients must participate on approved Learning Abroad, Utah Asia Campus, Eccles Global, or Hinckley Global Internship Programs to receive their awards.
Learning Abroad has two application deadlines each year--an early and a regular deadline. The early deadline allows you to know if you received a scholarship before committing to a program. We encourage students to apply early when possible. Additionally, If you applied for a scholarship by the early deadline and did not receive it, you can still apply for the same scholarship by the regular deadline.

This essay-based scholarship is intended to increase access to Learning Abroad Programs for students.

This scholarship increases access to Learning Abroad and Hinckley Global Internships for students who would normally not participate due to significant financial constraints. Pell Grant recipients are strongly encouraged to apply.

U of U Scholarships for Learning Abroad
The Aaron Michael Karitis Study Abroad Scholarship
A scholarship fund established in 2018 in honor of Aaron Michael Karitis to be awarded to one or more students who are studying abroad with the PRT program. Recipients must be enrolled in PRT coursework and have declared a major in an undergraduate or graduate degree in PRT.

Center for Latin American Studies Travel Stipend ($1,000 - $1,200)
The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) Travel Stipend supports undergraduate student travel to Latin America for University of Utah run study abroad programs approved through CLAS.

College of Pharmacy Global Health Travel Scholarship ($500)
The International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation (IPSF) will award three scholarships to students who are participating in the Global Health opportunities that are available within the College of Pharmacy.
Bradley Parker Memorial Scholarship
The Bradley Parker Memorial Scholarship will offer 1 to 2 scholarships per year of $1,000 to students (undergraduate and graduate students are eligible) who plan to travel abroad for their studies during Summer or Academic Year terms. Learning Abroad programs as well as other academic-related travel will be considered.
International Studies - Dee Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship
Through a generous gift from the Lawrence T. and Janet T. Dee Foundation, the International Studies Program and the Department of World Languages and Cultures are able offer a limited number of scholarships for declared majors to support participation in approved study abroad programs (Hinckley global internships are not currently eligible for support). These funds can be used to cover study abroad fees and tuition.
Dee Foundation Student Travel Grant - Department of History
Through a generous gift from the Lawrence T. and Janet T. Dee Foundation, the Department of History is able to support travel for undergraduate History majors and minors, including learning abroad. These funds can be used to cover related travel expenses. The standard award is $500. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, but the priority deadline is November 15th.
Department of International and Area Studies FLAS Scholarship
The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships program provides allocations of academic year and summer fellowships to undergraduate students and graduate students for foreign language or international studies. Eligible students should contact the University of Utah International & Area Studies department for application details.
Department of International Studies and Middle East Studies Scholarship List

Department of World Languages and Cultures Learning Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship is available for students who participate in a Summer Faculty-Led language intensive program through Learning Abroad. The Department of World Languages and Cultures selects recipients for this scholarship.
Division of Physician Assistant Studies: Pederson Family Foundation Scholarship for International Study
Don and Kathy Pedersen, the Pedersen Family Foundation, and the University of Utah’s Division of Physician Assistant Studies offer a competitive scholarship for University of Utah physician assistant students. Scholarship recipients will be awarded funds to help offset the cost of attending international rotations during the Spring Semester of the clinical year.
Division of Public Health Global Public Health Program Learning Abroad Scholarship ($500-$1500)
The Division of Public Health will award up to three scholarships to students who participate in a Global Public Health Learning Abroad program through the Division of Public health.
Foreign Language and Area Studies Scholarship (FLAS)
The FLAS Scholarship provides funding for graduate or undergraduate students for study of underrepresented languages during one academic year or a summer fellowship. The University of Utah receives an allocation of fellowships from the U.S. Department of Education each year for FLAS.
Jack Lunt and Gordon & Connie Hanks Summer Study Prize ($500)
Established in 1992 by the J. George Jones, Jr. Trust, this award provides funding for students within the College of Fine Arts who plan to take coursework over the summer. This application (due in March) requires a personal essay and a current Degree Audit Report. Only complete applications will be considered.
Japan Foundation Scholarship
The Japan Foundation Scholarship will support undergraduate or graduate students in their study of Japanese language courses while on the Summer term *Intensive Japanese Language program in Osaka, Japan at the University of Utah.
Please note that the Learning Abroad program application due date is February 15th for the following Summer and is separate from this scholarship application. For further information, please visit the Learning Abroad website.
The summer scholarship will award each recipient up to a maximum of $4,000 for tuition. All awards are pending approval for travel from the funding organization.
Rosaline Pao Memorial Scholarship
The Rosaline Pao Memorial Scholarship will offer scholarships ranging from $1,000 – $3,000 to both undergraduate and graduate students who plan to travel to China for their studies (including China-focused study, language training, and/or research) during Summer or Academic Year terms. Learning Abroad programs as well as other academic-related travel will be considered.
*All awards will be contingent on travel authorizations being granted.
Sophomore Rise Ivory Homes Deeply Engaged Experience ($1,000)
Students who apply will be eligible to receive one award of up to $1,000. Applicants must be a current sophomore, second-year student, non-continuous and/or returning sophomore student, or transfer student entering their sophomore year. Applicants must submit a proposal for a deeply engaged learning project.
Proposals could include:
- Learning Abroad Opportunity
- Alternative Fall/Spring Break
- Internship
- Attending a Conference
- Academic Project
The Kay Linscott Rohrer Study Abroad Scholarship ($1,000)
The Honors College will award one scholarship to a first-generation Honors College student who plans to learn abroad for a minimum of 3 credit hours. Applicants must demonstrate acceptance/enrollment in a Learning Abroad Program and provide a short statement on how this experience will enhance or assist them in achieving their undergraduate education goals. The deadline falls in March each year. Note: The 2019 cycle application has been extended until November 2019.
Totoki Memorial Scholarship
The Totoki Memorial Scholarship will offer scholarships ranging from $1,000 – $4,000 to both undergraduate and graduate students who plan to travel to Japan for their studies during Summer or Academic Year terms. Learning Abroad programs as well as other academic-related travel will be considered.

Success & Need-Based Scholarships
Gilman Scholarship Program
The Gilman Scholarship Program provides awards (of up to $8,000) for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. The deadlines typically fall in early October (Spring/Calendar Year/Summer Programs) and March (Summer/Fall/Academic Year Programs) each year. We recommend meeting with the University of Utah's Gilman Advisor to discuss the application process as soon as possible.
Diversity Abroad Scholarships
Diversity Abroad has partnered with several organizations to offer study abroad grants and scholarships. Some awards are general and others are for specific programs or destinations.
Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman ASIA)
Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provide funding for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. We recommend meeting with the University of Utah's Freeman ASIA Advisor to discuss the application process as soon as possible. Applications are due in March or April annually.
Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) Scholarships
FEA gives preference to students with demonstrated financial need, and strongly encourages students who represent a group that is traditionally underrepresented in education abroad to apply. The deadline to apply usually falls in September (Spring/Calendar Year Programs) and January (Summer/Fall/Academic Year/Calendar Year Programs ).
GI Bill
Under certain circumstances, veterans can use the GI Bill toward the cost of learning abroad. Students intending to use Voc Rehab or GI Bill funding should contact the University of Utah Veterans Support Center as soon as possible to begin the process of applying through VA! The process for funding approval is lengthy. We recommend that students begin planning 6-8 months in advance.
The Korea Society Undergraduate Korea Study Abroad Grant
The Korea Society Undergraduate Korea Study Abroad Grant provides undergraduate students funds to defray travel expenses for students who would
normally struggle financially to realize the life-changing experience of studying
abroad, the soft-skill development which future employers find so attractive, and,
most importantly, the chance to cultivate an in-person understanding of Korea, a country
of strategic importance to the U.S

Affiliate Scholarships
Click the links below to review scholarships for students participating on Affiliate Learning Abroad Programs. Students must apply directly through their Affiliate Program Provider to be considered.
As a University of Utah student, you are eligible to receive a $200 discount when you learn abroad with ISA/TEAN.
As a University of Utah student, you will automatically receive an affiliate grant when you study abroad with CEA CAPA. Academic Year: $1500; Semester: $750; Summer: $300.
Exchange Scholarships
Christian-Albrects-Universitat (CAU) Kiel Exchange Scholarship
CAU Kiel offers a 740 euro per month stipend to all eligible University of Utah undergraduate students who plan to participate in the U of U/CAU Kiel exchange program. Master’s students receive 800 euro per month and doctoral students receive 900 euro per month. This scholarship helps cover living expenses. Please contact Learning Abroad for more information.
Heidelberg University Exchange Scholarship
Heidelberg University (HU) offers two semester scholarships each year to University of Utah undergraduate students who apply to participate in the U of U/HU exchange program. This scholarship provides students with a 700 euro/month stipend and also covers the cost of a free preparatory language course.
All students who apply on time (deadlines below) to the Heidelberg University Exchange program, regardless of length of program, will be automatically considered for this scholarship.
Selection Criteria:
- GPA
- Quality of “Learning Abroad: Personal Statement and Experience” essay: The personal statement and experience essay is part of the Learning Abroad application. In this 400-500 word essay, students must describe how studying at Heidelberg University aligns with their academic, professional, and personal goals.
Deadlines: March 1st : Fall or Academic Year, September 15th: Spring or Calendar Year
Heidelberg University HAUS Scholarship for Exchange Students
Students looking to spend a semester at Heidelberg University are welcome to apply for this scholarship. Award amounts are: $5,000 for Master’s program students and $3,000 for Bachelor’s program students for the winter semester 2018/2019 or the summer semester 2019*. It may be possible to renew the support for an additional semester. The scholarship is completely funded by Heidelberg alumni residing in the U.S.

Japanese Student Services Organization (JASSO) Student Exchange Program Scholarship
The Japanese Student Services Organization (JASSO) offers awards for students interested in studying abroad in Japan.
Students pursing an exchange in Japan should contact the Learning Abroad exchange team about the need-based “JASSO Student Exchange Support Program” Scholarship. Learning Abroad’s exchange team will be able to reach out to the Japanese university you plan to attend for JASSO application steps. Each university in Japan has their own application process for JASSO grants.
Korean Government Scholarship Program and Benefits for Exchange Students
The winners of this scholarship will receive a monthly stipend of KRW 500,000 (around USD $450), as well as reimbursement of round-trip airfare. The nominees for this scholarship will be chosen by Sogang OIA and will be contacted individually.
Management Center Innsbruck (MCI) - Ernst Mach Scholarship for studying at an Austrian university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule)
Students (Undergraduate/Graduate) looking to spend one or two semesters at Management Center Innsbruck during the 2020-2021 academic year are welcome to apply for this scholarship. The grant is EUR 1,050 per month.
To be eligible, you must complete your Learning Abroad exchange application for MCI by February 1, 2021. Learning Abroad must then nominate you to MCI and you must complete your scholarship application by March 1, 2021. Once you receive your MCI acceptance letter, you will then be able to complete the “Ernst Mach Grant for studying at an Austrian university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule)” grant application.
Please note that this is a grant offered by the Austrian government, not by MCI, and it is competitive. For questions about the application process, contact Learning Abroad.
MEXT Scholarship for Japanese Studies
Learning Abroad can nominate one student per year for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Scholarship. Students must be enrolled at the University of Utah at the undergraduate level and be majoring in fields related to Japanese language or Japanese studies/culture at the time of both arrival in and departure from Japan. Applicants must have studied Japanese or Japanese studies/culture at a university for a total period of at least one year. In order to be eligible for the MEXT Scholarship, applicants must complete a Learning Abroad Waseda University exchange application first. Terms of the scholarship include:
- Scholarship: 117,000 yen per month (tentative) and travel expenses one round trip
- Period of scholarship: 10 months, from October to July of the following year
- Application period will be announced via email.
- Eligibility and conditions: Exchange students who plan to enter Waseda’s Japanese Language Program for one year.
University of Kiel Summer School Scholarship
University of Kiel offers one scholarship each summer for a U of U student participating on their German Language and Culture program. This scholarship, which is typically due in March, includes free participation in all course activities, food (half-board) and housing.
The scholarship is open to students from all fields and at all levels (undergraduate, graduate, PhDs), but you must have basic German language skills since all lectures are given in German. Students should have passed the CEFR level A 2.2 before they can participate in the Summer Course.

Sogang Global Scholarship
Students who have applied and been nominated for the Sogang University exchange will have the option to apply for this award that provides a housing fee discount for the on-campus dormitory. Students with financial need are encouraged to apply!
Sogang KLEC Special Scholarship
The Korean Language Education Center (KLEC) at Sogang University offers a scholarship that provides a 10% discount on tuition to students with a letter of recommendation from a director of Korean language department or his/her Korean language instructor. The application is typically due in early May.
Tsinghua University China-US Humanities Exchange Scholarship
The Chinese government offers funding to US students participating in an approved exchange program at Tsinghua University. If nominated for this exchange, the Learning Abroad Exchange Coordinator will recommend you for this funding, which provides a monthly stipend of RMB 2500.
Scholarships for students studying at USYD
This scholarship targets students who are from underrepresented demographics in Study Abroad (First in family, LGBTQ+, First Nations, Women in STEM, student athletes).
Additionally, Social Media Ambassador Scholarships of $1,500 AUD for students from the same groups, with experience in social media content creation. All interested students will be invited to apply shortly before the start of each semester, and the scholarship will be available to both Study Abroad and Exchange students.
National Scholarships
ASF Fellowships and Grants
The American Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) welcomes applications for fellowships and grants to research and study in Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden). Fellowships can be up to $23,000 and grants can be up to $5,000. Preference is given to students at the graduate level. The deadline is typically in early November.
Ashley Soulé Conroy Study Abroad Scholarship
Undergraduates applying to study abroad for 14 weeks or more may apply for this $4,000 award. Deadlines typically fall in late December and early August.
Asia Institute Global Business Scholarship
This $1,000 scholarship, created by The Asia Institute, is for any student pursuing a major, minor, masters or doctoral degree in the field of International Business. To be eligible, applicants must also be planning to participate in a program located in Asia.
Asia Institute International Engineering Scholarship
The Asia Institute offers this $1,000 scholarship to any student pursuing an engineering major, minor, masters or doctoral degree. To be eligible, applicants must also be planning to participate in a program located in Asia.
Boren Scholarship
Boren Scholarships, established by the National Security Education Program, provide funding for high achieving U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests. Award amounts range from $8,000-$20,000. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation. We recommend meeting with the University of Utah's Boren Advisor to discuss the application process as soon as possible.
BRIC Language Systems Go Global Scholarship
This scholarship is intended for U.S. citizens with a 3.0 G.P.A.. or higher and a desire to study abroad. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to the applicant who is best able to articulate the importance of language learning and its place in society. The essay-based applications are typically due in June. The scholarship is awarded directly to the winner and can be used for tuition, books, language classes, etc.
Bridging Project Scholarship
The American Association of Teachers of Japanese administers the Bridging Project, which offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Students of any major may apply. Applicants must study in Japan for at least 3 months to be eligible. Applications are accepted twice a year.
Bright!Tax Global Scholar Scholarship
The Bright!Tax Global Scholar Initiative supports US citizens who are living and/or studying abroad on full semester study abroad programs. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.9 to apply.
Delta Phi Alpha Spring/Summer German Study Abroad Scholarship
The Spring/Summer German Study Abroad Scholarship supports Delta Phi Alpha members that plan to study abroad in a German-speaking country. The program start date must begin between January and June. Multiple scholarships of up to $1,500 will be awarded. Preference is given to programs with German language study, a duration of six or more weeks, and relevance to their academic and professional goals. Apply in November.
Foundation for Asia Pacific Education Scholarship
This scholarship advances the mission of the Foundation for Asia Pacific Education: to create global citizens and leaders by assisting students obtain cultural and academic experiences within the Asia Pacific region. Applications are typically due in April, August, and December.

Jessie Lokrantz Scholarship
The purpose of the scholarship is to facilitate study for American citizens at accredited Swedish universities. The course of study must be for at least one academic year. The deadline to apply is usually in February.
King Olav V Norwegian-American Heritage Scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship is to fund activities in which Norwegian heritage is explored, studied and shared by qualified scholarship recipients. Any American undergraduate student and a keen and sincere interest in Norwegian heritage may apply.
Paul Anthony Bonenfant Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2011 in memory of Paul Anthony Bonenfant, this $8,000 scholarship enables students enrolled in engineering and/or physical science programs to attend semester-abroad programs. The goal of the scholarship is to provide international experience to students as they prepare for professional lives that promote global engagement and collaboration. In order to be eligible, applicants must be undergraduate and graduate students in the US, show a demonstrated interest in optics related research and applications, and plan to participate in a study-abroad program of at least 6 week’s duration. Applications are typically due in late April each year.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Scholarship
Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Fifty $1,000 grants are awarded each year.
Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarships
The Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship is awarded biannually to passionate students who want to explore the world.
Going Abroad Scholarship
Scott’s Cheap Flights awards four scholarships per year (two in the spring, two in the fall) in the amount of $1,500 each. The application includes an essay of 500-1000 words.
International Scholarships
British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX)
Each year, BUTEX awards a number of scholarships to students studying abroad in the UK for a minimum of one semester. The scholarships (£500 each) are open to all undergraduate students currently registered at an institution in the USA or Canada.
German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides grants for Undergraduate and Graduate students from the US and Canada to study, intern, and conduct research in Germany.
Japanese Student Services Organization (JASSO) Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship
The Japanese Student Services Organization (JASSO) offers awards for students interested in studying abroad in Japan. Application instructions for this merit-based scholarship are in Japanese only.
The U.S.-Japan Council Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship
The Toshizo Watanabe Study Abroad Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to undergraduates/graduate students for a semester or year-long study abroad program in Japan. The scholarship will support up to the full cost of attendance to the study abroad program of the applicant’s choice. The scholarship program grants awards to recipients in amounts determined by financial need and other qualifications. Average Award Amount: $18,082.
Education New Zealand Generation Study Abroad Excellence and Travel Awards
Students learning abroad in New Zealand at participating institutions, including the University of Waikato, may be eligible to apply for a scholarship of up to $2000. The deadlines to apply usually fall in April and December.
Study in Holland Scholarships
The Dutch government has created a database to explore scholarships and grants for students who wish to study in the Netherlands.
Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowship will open online applications for the 2023-24 academic year on September 1, 2022. Applications must be submitted by November 15, 2022.
The fellowship – now open to applicants from around the globe – offers funding of approximately EUR 58,000 (ILS 188,000) for 24 postdocs per year. Azrieli Postdoctoral Fellows can conduct research in any academic discipline at eligible institutions in Israel.
Candidates are required to secure an academic sponsor prior to applying.
Internatinal Internship Scholarship Program
The International Internship Scholarship Pilot Program was established in 2023 and provides funding for students at USHE degree-granting institutions who are participating in an international internship program.
