What to consider during your advising appointment

Before you go abroad, it's important to meet with your academic advisor to ensure your experience aligns with your academic goals. Make sure you discuss:

Course Selection: find out which courses you can take abroad.

Credit Type: understand which credit type you are earning (Transfer or U of U) and how they will fit into your degree requirements.

Best Timing: discover the ideal time to go abroad for your major.

Graduation Timeline: discuss how you can stay on track for graduation while studying abroad.

Review a list courses that have already been evaluated in the spreadsheet below.

Financial Aid

Most forms of financial aid can be applied to eligible Learning Abroad programs. You must meet standard financial aid eligibility requirements for Learning Abroad. We strongly encourage you to visit with a Financial Aid Advisor before committing to a program to ensure all necessary steps are completed with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

Understanding Two Types of Credits

It’s important to understand which type of credit you’ll be earning on your Learning Abroad program. You will earn University of Utah Credit on Faculty-led programs and at the Utah Asia Campus. On Exchange and Affiliate programs you will earn transfer credits. 

When you earn transfer credit on your Exchange or Affiliate program, we require you to submit course approval requests in the Course Approval section of your Learning Abroad application. We do this to make sure the course you want to take can count for credit at the U. Step-by-step instructions are provided in your application and your requests will be reviewed by the appropriate department. It may take up to 6 weeks for final decisions.

Upon your return, it can take 6-8 weeks after your transcript is received for your credits to be evaluated and posted. Learn more in our Student Handbook.

International Student

Before applying, contact ISSS to discuss how participating in a Learning Abroad program may affect your U.S. visa.

Utah Asia Campus Students
Learning Abroad counts toward the overall 90 credits that you must take at the Utah Asia Campus. It does not count toward the 2 semesters that you must spend at the Salt Lake Campus. Schedule an appointment with us before opening an application.

Non-U of U Student

The University of Utah welcomes non-U of U students to apply for certain programs.
