First Steps
Studying abroad can be an extremely exciting and rewarding experience! Learning Abroad at the University of Utah provides students with over 500 programs to choose from in over 50 countries which range in length from one week to one academic year. There are opportunities for career development skills, for language immersion, research experience, the community engagement. There are opportunities available for all majors!
If you’re wondering where to start, here are your first steps:
1. Attend Learning Abroad 101
In this information session, we will provide you with the tools and information you need to find the best program for you! We cover information about the different types of programs we offer, the application process, as well as scholarship information. This is a required step for all applications. Sign up here!
2. Identify your Goals
Your learning abroad experience is whatever you make of it. Maybe you want to use your time abroad to hone your language skills, conduct research that will prepare you for graduate school, focus on developing career skills, or engage with the local community. Identifying what you want to get out of your program is a critical step to the application process so you can make the most out of it!
3. Determine Academic Needs
If you want your Learning Abroad program to be incorporated into your academic plan, you will want to discuss this with your Academic Advisor(s) early so that they can help you identify what requirements you need to fulfill before graduation.
4. Start the Search
After attending Learning Abroad 101, identifying your goals, and understanding your academic needs, you can begin your program search! Our Search Programs page allows you to sort by area of study, length of program, program provider, etc. If you still have questions, you can do a program search with a peer adviser in the office or can schedule an appointment with a coordinator in the office.
We are here to help you choose a program and make the most out of it! You are welcome to send us an e-mail at learningabroad@utah.edu or come into our office in the Union, room 159 Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (except for holidays).
